Die Detektivagentur „Checkmate“ unter der Leitung von Don Corey (Anthony George) sowie der emeritierte Oxford-Professor Carl Hyatts (Sebastian Cabot) und Jed Sills (Doug McClure) setzt im Auftrage ihrer Klienten dunkle Elemente ebenso – nämlich im wahrsten Sinne des Seriennamens - Schachmatt. Sie beschützen Personen, deren Leben in Gefahr ist - und die natürlich auch genug Geld für ihren exklusiven Service haben. Statt Verbrechen aufzuklären ist ihre Aufage, das Verbrechen zu verhindern, bevor es überhaupt verübt wird.

 

Checkmate ist die Sereinadaption eine in den USA berkannter Comicbuchreihe. In Deutschland wurden von den 70 Episoden lediglich 20 Episoden ausgestrahlt. Der Running Gag der Serie war, dass Hauptdarsteller Sebastian Cabot in jeder Folge die gleiche Kleidung trug. Dies hatte er sich vor Drehbeginn vertraglich zu verpflichtet.
